This lab demonstrates how to use AWS Elemental MediaConvert to develop a video on demand (VOD) workflow that converts video content stored in Amazon S3 into new formats for storage, reuse, and delivery.
Whether you are working with video for a web application, an over-the-top (OTT, i.e. via the internet) platform, or for broadcast cable, you need to deliver the video in a standard format that ensures a high quality and consistent experience to viewers. Broadcast and OTT video platforms, such as cable TV channels and Apple TV, specify the video features, packaging, and encoding that their platforms can decode and play out. MediaConvert provides the mechanism for converting videos to formats that conform to these policies.
Example of an OTT video standard:
- The HLS Authoring Specification for Apple Devices gives details about the component outputs of adaptive bitrate stacks supported by Apple devices including information about codecs, bitrates, and resolutions they support.
Example of a broadcast video standard:
- The CableLabs Mezzanine Encoding Specification specifies a standard for encoding and packaging for video content that will be exchanged and reused by downstream workflows. For example, you might choose this standard if you wanted to archive news videos in a content management system and then resell them to downstream consumers.
By the end of this lab, you will be able to use AWS Elemental MediaConvert to:
- Convert an input video into different output formats.
- Combine multiple video inputs into one video output (input stitching).
- Select parts of input videos to be converted into other outputs (input clipping).
- Modify a video output by burning in a timecode and inserting an image.
- Add captions to a video output.
Technical Knowledge Prerequisites
To successfully complete this lab, you should be familiar with basic navigation of the AWS Management Console.
Notice the lab properties below the lab title:
- setup - The estimated time to set up the lab environment
- access - The time the lab will run before automatically shutting down
- completion - The estimated time the lab should take to complete
- At the top of your screen, launch your lab by clicking
If you are prompted for a token, use the one distributed to you (or credits you have purchased).
A status bar shows the progress of the lab environment creation process. The AWS Management Console is accessible during lab resource creation, but your AWS resources may not be fully available until the process is complete.

This will automatically log you into the AWS Management Console.
Please do not change the Region unless instructed.
